During World War II, prisoners at a German POW camp were allowed to form a choir. The guards welcomed it. Music, they believed, kept prisoners calm, obedient, and distracted.
They were wrong.
What the guards didn’t know was that the singing was camouflage.
Beneath the barracks floorboards, prisoners worked in shifts, digging a tunnel using spoons, bed slats, and bare hands. Every scrape of dirt was carefully timed to the choir’s loudest rehearsals. When the digging intensified, the singing grew stronger.
Dirt was hidden in socks and slowly dumped during routine yard walks. Month after month, the tunnel grew longer—completely unnoticed.
One night, under the familiar sound of song, dozens of prisoners slipped into the tunnel and disappeared. By the time guards realized something was wrong, men were already missing.
Not all survived. But the escape became one of the most ingenious acts of resistance of the war.
In this camp, music wasn’t entertainment.
It was camouflage.
