We covered Chapters 1 and 3 in this sermon titled “How to Get Fired in Babylon,” and we covered Chapter 2 in this sermon in case you want to review the prior studies before jumping into Chapter 4.
Big Idea: We find ourselves in a changing, increasingly secular culture that demands our attention and our absolute allegiance. And we can sense the winds of local and even global change as technology develops at breakneck speed, disease impacts our lives, and old divisions and conflict around the world threaten our sense of peace. So, what should we do? How should we live in such secular and uncertain times? Well, let’s learn from Daniel, an Old Testament prophet and statesmen who prayed for and provided wisdom to at least four kings in two competing and diverse empires and pointed them to the one, true and eternal king. Here’s the Daniel Manuel for living in such a time as this.
Chapter 4 is a fascinating narrative, including a foreign king’s praise of Israel’s God (a first or at least one of the first in the Bible?), another strange dream, Daniel’s interpretation of that vision, the glory of ancient Babylon, Nebuchadnezzar’s pride and madness, God’s judgment and mercy, and the great king’s final testimony before passing into history. I have studied the book of Daniel many times, but this chapter especially struck me as being filled with profound truths with apparent applications for our lives.
