The GTS That Was Never Built: Niels van Roij Design unveils Guida Touring Sport



A one-off conversion, blending iconic 1980s supercar DNA with modern coachbuilt craftsmanship.

Uden, The Netherlands – 4 September 2025 – At the Concours d’Elegance Mariënwaerdt 2025 (12–14 September), Dutch car design studio Niels van Roij Design will reveal Guida Touring Sport (GTS) — a fully bespoke targa conversion. This unique creation is based on an Italian 1987 twelve-cylinder mid-engined sports car, offering open-air driving without compromising the dramatic wedge profile, strakes, or rear buttresses that made the original legendary. It is hand-built, one-off, and after the show returning immediately to its private owner in Andorra.



OEM spirit, elevated by bespoke craft

The original coupé, first presented at the 1984 Paris Motor Show, was never intended to be offered as a targa. Yet, with uncompromising attention to detail, Niels van Roij Design has executed a transformation to Guida Touring Sport that feels fully authentic, as though conceived by the manufacturer itself. By adhering to an OEM design philosophy, the studio has ensured that the targa configuration integrates seamlessly with the car’s distinctive proportions and characterful lines.

To achieve this, the structure has been comprehensively reinforced in key areas, including the sills, the front and rear sections of the door apertures, the rear parcel shelf, the transmission tunnel, and structural elements beneath the dashboard. These enhancements guarantee both aesthetic harmony with the original design, as the majority has been integrated out of sight, and uncompromised rigidity.

Special attention has been given to the choice of materials, with both classic and a few contemporary finishes carefully selected to elevate the car’s atmosphere while respecting its period character. Every surface, seam, and component has been treated as an opportunity to celebrate craftsmanship. From the newly upholstered dashboard and redesigned door cards to the bespoke bags that house the roof panels and polished milled aluminium levers that open and close these panels.



A unique open-top flat twelve experience

The conversion fuses classic aesthetics with modern engineering, resulting in a unique driving experience that captures the essence of the original coupé while introducing a new dimension of open-air exhilaration.



Visual storytelling inspired by the 1980s

To accompany the unveiling, Guida Touring Sport is presented through a dedicated set of hand sketched automotive design renderings, plus a photography and film series, all heavily inspired by the visual language of the 1980s. The imagery captures the bold character of that decade, with cinematic lighting, retro-inspired colour grading, and period-reminiscent settings that echo the atmosphere in which this sports car first made its mark. By blending nostalgia with contemporary production values, the photography and video campaign underline the spirit of the era while celebrating the fresh design vision brought to life by Niels van Roij Design.
