Once one of the most important cities on the northern route of the Silk Road, Beiting (北庭古城) today lies silent in the vast Gobi Desert of Xinjiang.
In this video, we travel to the forgotten ruins of Beiting to uncover its history, explore what remains of its ancient walls and temples, and reflect on how time reshapes everything — even once-great civilizations.
We traveled all the way to the far west of China. Back in the Tang Dynasty, the poet Cen Shen once served in the army here in Beiting, and wrote famous poems like:
"The north wind sweeps the earth, bending white grass,
By August in these northern skies, snow begins to fall.
Suddenly, like a spring breeze overnight,
Thousands upon thousands of pear trees bloom."
