Painting through the Past | "Love Got Old" (Oil & Cold Wax)

This 12x16 oil and cold wax piece, titled Love Got Old, emerged from a specific intersection of music and memory. I began the session in a state of flow, listening to Leo Kottke’s live album. When the track "Flattened Brain" came on, it hit a nerve. I ended up looping it for the duration of the painting, letting the physical gestures of the palette knife follow the rhythm of the guitar.

The process began with a simple taped edge, charcoal lines, and a fat silver paint pen. From there, it became an intuitive battle of layers. I used the handle of a spoon to scratch back into the surface and pushed thick white paint upward into the blue to break up the space until the composition finally felt resolved.

As I worked, I found myself reflecting on a past relationship—one that ended not with a bang, but with a quiet realization that things had shifted without me noticing. This painting isn't a literal map of that time, but rather an emotional landscape that surfaced through the act of scraping and layering.
