In colder climates, during the first year, the shoots only grow. During the second year, biennial shoots bloom and bear berries. In fall time biennial vegetation has completely stopped and that part of the raspberry bush needs to be removed. The root part of the raspberry bush is perennial and is a central part that produces buds from which replacement first year shoots develop.
