La Campana de Oropesa es una comarca de la provincia de Toledo donde todavía se toca el rabel. En Lagartera ya no quedan rabelistas, pero tuvimos la suerte de conocer y compartir momentos intensos de música con José Reviriego (informante de Alan Lomax en 1952) antes de que nos dejara.
Alan Lomax visitó Lagartera en 1952 y dejó documentado el uso del rabel allí.
En Calzada de Oropesa vive Heliodoro Pulido, que toca y construye rabeles hoy día. Al verle tocar el rabel, observamos que usa alguna melodía que grabó Lomax en Lagartera, pero con una particularidad: cuando Heliodoro interpreta los sones al rabel, ejecuta esta melodía de manera secuencial (es el mismo concepto del “tumbao” que se usa en la música cubana). Esta secuencia genera un conjunto de armónicos donde se van “montando” otras melodías del repertorio del son (otros sones). Al escuchar a Heliodoro hemos descubierto y aprendido otros usos del rabel diferentes al de imitar la melodía cantada.
Volviendo a escuchar las grabaciones de Lomax en Lagartera, fue nuestra sorpresa oír también estas maneras interpretativas que Heliodoro usa, de las que antes no nos habíamos percatado.
Hemos preparado esta “suite” donde usamos estas prácticas al rabel para diferentes melodías del repertorio del son Garterano.

La Campana de Oropesa is a region in the province of Toledo where the rabel is still played. In Lagartera, there are no longer any rabel players, but we were fortunate to meet and share intense moments of music with José Reviriego (an informant for Alan Lomax in 1952) before he passed away.

In Calzada de Oropesa, Heliodoro Pulido lives, who plays and builds rabeles today. Watching him play the rabel, we observed that he uses a melody that Lomax recorded in Lagartera, but with a particularity: when Heliodoro performs the rabel sones, he plays this melody sequentially (it's the same concept of "tumbao" used in Cuban music). This sequence generates a set of harmonics where other melodies from the son repertoire (other sones) are "mounted". Listening to Heliodoro, we have discovered and learned other uses of the rabel different from imitating the sung melody.
Listening again to Lomax's recordings in Lagartera, we were surprised to also hear these interpretative manners that Heliodoro uses, which we had not noticed before.
We have prepared this "suite" where we use these practices on the rabel for different melodies from the Garterano son repertoire.
