Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) is a symptom cluster of autism that is increasingly associated with challenges both at home and in the classroom. However, the nuances of how PDA manifests are not yet fully understood. For example, an individual might be on their way to fulfill a task, such as putting tools from the yard into the shed, but could become sensory overwhelmed before reaching the tools. This sensory overload may trigger a response of demand avoidance.
