Channel catfish require a cold period for normal gametogenesis, that is, for normal sperm and egg development. They require temperatures below 50 to 55F for a period of at least a month according to Channel Catfish Farming Handbook by Tucker and Robinson. My water temperatures have been below 50 to 55F for 2 weeks and then below 50F for another 2 weeks, starting 10/18/2018 to 11/17/2018. This should satisfy the temperature requirements for spawning this spring. The fish will be brought indoors where the temperature in the basement will stay between the high 50's to low 60's.
In this video, we see the 300 gallon breeding tank with a male Channel catfish and his 30 gallon breeding box. I also go over the filter and the low water alarm to detect leaks.
