Jackie incubated her eggs all night and wakes up in the morning to a beautiful Big Bear sunrise! Shadow arrives with a stick and Jackie gets up and takes a break. Shadow will approach the eggs, roll them and settle down for his Daddy duty. Shadow will get up periodically to roll the eggs and then return to incubating them.

The reason that the eagles roll the eggs so frequently is to keep the temperature even throughout the egg and to prevent the embryo from adhering to one side of the egg. Scientists also believe rotating also ensures that the embryo gets enough albumen (mixture of water and protein making up the egg white which provides nutrients). Too little albumen can lead to an underdeveloped chick. Once the eggs are moved the adult may need to move them to arrange the brood patch in the right spot - that is the ‘wiggle’ or shimmy one sees.

Jackie will return to the nest with a stick and Shadow departs. Shadow will return with two deliveries of fluff for the nest! Jackie finally takes a break and Shadow has egg duty. Jackie follows Shadow's lead and returns with long reed fluff and she will take over incubation duties! They did have flawless incubation switches! Thank you for watching!
