It’s my belief that we’re in a golden era of whisky enjoyment. Seriously. We’ve never had it so good.
But it’s the vPub - I need to prove it. How?
Well, firstly, I need to remind myself - and everyone - that what I do in my wee corner of the whisky space is focus everything through the lens of a punter: a drinker, a sipper, a flavour hound, bottle-chaser and general all-round ‘botherer’. I’m speaking of those who throw their own cash on the occasional bottle, not necessarily to polish it off, but to experience it and add it to the library of exploration. And sometimes polish it off too.
We needn’t be distracted by looking at things from the perspective of the industry, even if we sometimes try to.
When we attempt to look at things through the lens of whisky producers, we get dragged into trying to fathom all the (what we see as) ludicrous decisions and oddball ideas. We try to take in industry news and apply that to how it might affect our whisky enjoyment on the path ahead. We look at re-brands, price alignments, news of closures or partial mothballing, downturns and export figures measured by abstract percentages, global trade policies and economic climate. The outcome of this - especially in recent times - can cast a negative shadow over our whisky enjoyment.
While it’s all genuinely interesting, I think sometimes it does indeed distract from what brought us to whisky’s side in the first place.
So, this week, I’d like to provide examples of why we really don’t need to bother with these things. I mean, we can care and continue to take an interest, but realise that, all the while, whisky will always be there.
This session is inspired by a visit to my local retailer. After spending a little more than I intended (as always) I then came home to do a little searching online for the bottles that have been, for me, milestones over the last couple of years: harbingers of where whisky is and where it's going. I was only a little surprised to discover that they’re actually, mostly, still available.
Not only will I try to argue that we’re living through a particularly positive spell of whisky history, but I’ll hold up my favourite examples of where I think whisky sits amongst all of this and try to show that, for us, we’re in a pretty terrific place.
A golden era, perhaps.
I’d love to welcome you there!
