The TV series that kicked off in 2001 was created by Gangaraju Gunnam, of ‘Little Soldiers’, ‘Aithe’, ‘Anukokunda Oka Roju’ and ‘Ghazi’ fame. The title song, sung by Kalyan Koduri, is still one of the most iconic title songs that Telugu television has ever created, with many still caught humming, “Orey! Anjaneyulu. Tega aayasa padipoku chalu.”


What many don’t know is that today is Amrutham’s anniversary. It was on November 18, 2001, that the 25 minute long episodes of the show had begun amassing love from young ones and adults alike. It is also today in 2007, that the show heartbreakingly aired its final episode, ‘Tata Bye Bye Veedkolu’. If any viewers remember ‘Amrutham’ today, it is only for its clean sense of humour and stupendous acting that the whole family loved to watch together.


Through the years, the characters of Amrutham – played by Sivaji Raja, Naresh and Harsha Vardhan at various points of time, Anji – played by Gundu Hanumantha Rao, Sarvam – played by Vasu Inturi, Appaji – played by Sivannarayana and more have become household names. ‘Amrutham’ was a popular serial ever since it first aired, becoming the top Telugu sitcom in no time.


Many fans still watch the episodes online and wish the series had continued. The story of two friends starting a hotel in their front yard and dreaming big, despite having an oppressive landlord, is still entertaining to many. The makers of the hit series had even come up with a film titled ‘Amrutham Chandamamalo’ in 2014, starring Srinivas Avasarala as Amrutham and Harish as Anji. The film was a much-needed nostalgic trip for fans of the show.


‘Amrutham’ serial’s Youtube channel has 101,354 subscribers till date. There were even plans for a while to start the series again with the title ‘Amrutham Adwiteeyam’, but the plan was dropped due to a shortage of writers. While running, the TV series had managed to provide a good creative platform for many struggling musicians, writers, directors and more.
