Hey family – grab your tea, get comfy, because this one’s straight from the heart.
When Mark and I touched down in Hoi An over three weeks ago, I had no idea how much this beautiful country would change me… or how many conversations my skin color would spark. From kids in Hội An running up to me with huge grins shouting “hello friend!” To Chinese and other ethnicities from SouthEast Asia queueing to take photos with me, to strangers in Da Nang asking to take photos (and yes, sometimes touching my hair without asking), every day has been a mix of pure magic and lessons.
I’m sharing the moments that made me cry, laugh until my sides hurt, and truly feel seen – like the afternoon a cafe owner started showing us her secret recipe for egg coffee and salted coffee, just because she wanted me to feel at home. And I’m not holding back on the tough stuff either if you want to call it that – the stares, the pointing, the smiles, clapping with excitement, the touching my skin, and the questions that made me rethink what it means to be a Black traveler in Southeast Asia.
This isn’t just a video – it’s a love letter to Vietnam, a conversation about identity, and a reminder that no matter where we come from, human connection can bridge any gap. If you’ve ever felt “different” in a new place, or if you’re thinking about visiting Vietnam and want the real deal – this one’s for YOU.
