The movie follows the life story of local businessman turned tennis coach Richard Williams (Will Smith, who also serves as executive producer), the real life father of tennis icons Venus and Serena Williams, who also serve as the movie's co-executive producers. The movie was released on Friday, November 19, 2021 in cinemas by Warner Bros. Pictures and on the company's home streaming service HBO Max.

In early 90's Compton, California, Richard Williams (Will Smith) is raising his two daughters, Venus (Saniyya Sidney) and Serena (Demi Singleton), plus his three step-daughters alongside his wife Oracene "Brandy" Price (Aunjanue Ellis). Venus competes in ITF Junior Circuit before going pro in 1994 at the age of 14. Richard expresses hesitation about her going pro, to the chagrin of her mother. Richard soon changes his mind and signs up both his daughters with coach Rick Macci (Jon Bernthal). The family move to Florida once the two daughters become professional players. Venus competes against Arantxa Sánchez Vicario from Spain in 1994. Nine months later, she signs a contract with Reebok.
