INEC has revised the 2027 general election calendar under the newly enacted Electoral Act 2026, with the presidential poll now fixed for January 16, 2027 and governorship and state assembly elections set for February 6, 2027. These changes align statutory timelines for primaries, campaigns, and dispute resolution with the updated law. Meanwhile, leading opposition figures including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, Rauf Aregbesola (and others) have publicly rejected the Electoral Act 2026, describing it as anti-democratic, an overreach on political party autonomy, and harmful to electoral transparency and fairness. They’re demanding fresh amendment or repeal, arguing the law undermines party rights, weakens election credibility, and could heighten political tensions ahead of 2027.
