"He created his most important chamber music pieces in the 1920s. The Divertissement for oboe, clarinet and bassoon, completed at the end of March 1927 and premiered in Paris in April, is a typical product of the "Roaring Twenties", as it contains a Charleston and many other things that bear witness to the spirit and desires of the time. In its mixture of harsh dissonances, free tonality, neo-baroque rhythm and a cheeky, frivolous art of characterization, it is related to the early Hindemith, whose level is by no means undercut here. The proximity to the pulse of the time can be seen in many things: in the relaxed merging of light and serious music, in the ironic dig at the longing for America of the time (Florida), in the mockery of the sentimentality of the epoch, that of Heinrich Heine term Romanzero falls back."
