After a rainy Saturday night, we wanted a trail that would stay solid and hike-ready — and this 4.5-mile adventure delivered spectacular views, dramatic weather, and an unforgettable day in the Sandia Mountains of New Mexico.

This loop starts with a 1,270 ft climb that rewards you immediately with sweeping views of Bernalillo, Rio Rancho, and Albuquerque. The cloud cover added a dramatic touch to the normally clear New Mexico skies, and we watched distant storms roll across the mountains. Halfway through our hike, the rain reached us with a light sprinkle before clearing again as the sun broke through — a beautiful way to end the day on the trail.

This route is considered difficult, with steep climbs at the start and end and downhill sections with loose gravel where trekking poles come in handy. It’s a fantastic hike for anyone wanting big Sandia views without worrying about muddy trail conditions.

This trail is dog-friendly, but make sure to bring plenty of water for your pups — water is not guaranteed in Juan Tabo Canyon. And as always, please practice Leave No Trace to help keep this canyon wild and beautiful.
