Lieu culturel incontournable de la vie artistique bruxelloise, la Villa Empain est également un remarquable témoin de l’architecture Art déco, construit au début des années 1930 par l’architecte Michel Polak, sur commande du Baron Louis Empain.
Tour à tour maison privée, musée, ambassade d’URSS, siège de la chaine de télévision luxembourgeoise RTL, la villa vit au rythme de l’histoire bruxelloise. Partiellement détruite et vandalisée, elle est laissée à l’abandon dans un état déplorable au début des années 80. La Fondation Boghossian décide de l’acquérir en 2006 et d’en entamer la restauration qui durera quatre ans. Projet à la fois complexe et délicat, la minutie de la restauration, menée dans le respect de l’histoire du bâtiment est récompensée par l’Union Européenne avec le prix Europa Nostra. En 2010, elle ouvre ses portes au public comme Centre d’art et de dialogue entre les cultures d’Orient et d’Occident.

ART DECO in Brussels: the Boghossian Foundation acquires the former Villa of Baron Empain and turns it into a museum

A cultural landmark in Brussels' artistic life, the Villa Empain is also a remarkable example of Art Deco architecture, built in the early 1930s by architect Michel Polak, commissioned by Baron Louis Empain.
In turn private home, museum, USSR embassy and headquarters of the Luxembourg television station RTL, the villa has lived at the pace of Brussels history. Partially destroyed and vandalized, it was abandoned in a deplorable state in the early 1980s. In 2006, the Boghossian Foundation acquired the villa and began a four-year restoration project. A complex and delicate project, the meticulous restoration, carried out with respect for the building's history, was rewarded by the European Union with the Europa Nostra prize. In 2010, it opens its doors to the public as a center for art and dialogue between Eastern and Western cultures.
