Gate lining (sometimes known as *thumb lining) refers to the use of a pair of lines of the mast to pull the gates open. The line is looped around the handrail in such a way that when the lines are under tension the gates can be pulled open then when it goes slack the loops unwind. It was used in the working days when boaters where not required to close gates behind them so the lines could be set then when the lock is ready nobody has to be on the lock side.
Unfortunately now the gates have to be closed up behind the boats it is becoming a less used skill. On this run we where 3 handed and so not having to have two people on the lock side to open the gates proved invaluable.
Thumb lining refers to a line to hold the butty in the lock as the motor leaves so that the motor can pull the butty fore end over allowing them both to get out of 1 gate.
The Narrow boat trust operates a pair of working boats still carrying coal on canal network today. The trust is run completely by volunteers. If you want to find out more or think it’s something you would like to try have a look at their website:
