A liquid drop impact on a Marchantia polymorpha gemmae cup.
In many liverwort species, asexual reproduction is accomplished through the dispersal of gemmae (small disks of cells capable of becoming full-grown adults). Some liverworts have evolved "splash cups" as a mechanism of dispersal. These "splash cups" hold the gemmae until a raindrop comes along to splash them out. The Marchantia polymorpha gemmae cup seen in this video is approximately 4 mm tall and 4 mm in diameter, while the gemmae contained inside are a maximum of 0.5 mm in diameter, so quite a small world! The drops used in these videos were approximately 0.10-0.20 mL and all videos were shot at 1000 frames per second. This video represents approximately 0.04 seconds of real time!
