After years of using foreign equipment, Italy revitalized its industry by license-building the German Leopard 1 in the 1970s. This experience led to the OF-40, Italy's first domestic Main Battle Tank designed for export. Entering production in 1980, the OF-40 reached speeds of 60 km/h and featured a powerful 105mm gun. While similar to the Leopard 1, it incorporated local innovations in tropical cooling and fire control, marking a major milestone in Italy's modern armored development.
