A baroque dance, Forlana, from Le Carnaval de Venise, a lyric comedy.
Music: André Campra (1660-1744)
Choreography: Louis Pécour (1653-1729)
Performed by Yoko Murakoshi, accompanied by the Early Music Consort of Melbourne.
This performance formed part of the Courtly Arts Performers of Victoria's programme A Room in Europe (August 2019), in which we presented music, dance and song from the Baroque era.
Note: Please excuse the quality of the recording. We recorded without a tripod (never again!!), and acknowledge that the audio quality is not the best. Despite this, we wanted to share some of this lovely concert with you :)
In the stately homes of Europe, friends would gather to present and enjoy musical offerings in a relaxed and intimate setting. In our concert A Room in Europe, you can join the Early Music Consort of Melbourne, Baroque dancer Yoko Murakoshi and soprano Sarah Louise Amos to relive chamber music of the 17th and 18th Century. Composers include Frescobaldi, Lully, Bach and Telemann, performed on period instruments including recorders, viol and guitar.
Dance was a major component of the French Baroque. These dances for a solo woman by Lully and Campra are ideally suited to the intimate surrounds of the salon: Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme a comedy ballet written by Molière with music composed by Lully; Le Carnaval de Venise is a lyric comedy composed by Campra; and Phaëton is a tragédy en musique based on a story from Ovid’s Metamorphoses composed by Lully.
