The Dinka people (Jiɛ̈ɛ̈ŋ) are a Nilotic ethnic group native to South Sudan with a sizable diaspora population abroad.
Linguists divide Dinka into five dialect clusters, but the most comprehensive subdivisions are based on the geographical location of the Jiɛ̈ɛ̈ŋ (Dinkas) people:
1. North-eastern Jiɛ̈ɛ̈ŋ (Dinka): Abiliaŋ, ŋɔŋ Lual-Yak, Doŋjɔl, Luäc, Ageer, Rut, and Thoi
2. North-western Jiɛ̈ɛ̈ŋ (Dinka): Panaruu, ŋɔŋ Deŋ-Kuɔl, Paweny, and Alɔɔr
3. South Central Jiɛ̈ɛ̈ŋ (Dinka) : Aliab, Agaar, Atuɔ̈t, Ciëc and Gɔ̈k.
4. South-eastern Jiɛ̈ɛ̈ŋ (Dinka) : Twïc, Bor, Hɔ̈l, and Nyarweŋ
5. South-western Jiɛ̈ɛ̈ŋ (Dinka) : Twïc, Aguɔk, Apuk, Awan, Kuac, Abiëm, Rek, Lɔu, Luäc, Malual, Paliët, and Paliëupiny.
The name Dinka (Jiɛ̈ɛ̈ŋ, Muɔny-Jäŋ). The people call themselves Jiɛ̈ɛ̈ŋ or Muɔnyjäŋ. The Nuer call them ‘Jiang’; Shilluk call them ‘Jango’; northern Sudanese, the Arabs and Equatorians call them Jiengge; All stemming from Jiɛ̈ɛ̈ŋ (Jieng).
The Dinka people’s autonym of their language is Thuɔŋjäŋ, meaning the language of the people, according to Muller (1877a: 48). The term Dinka which is now referred as people and a language was encountered and given its now-common name by foreigners, i.e. Arabs, Turks, European missionaries, and colonizers, who all came from the North. Due to lack of a standardized orthography, several different spellings of the name of the Dinka people [are] found in the literature, for example: Jäŋ, Jeŋ, Jiëŋ, Jaŋ or Jiëëŋ (Muller above).
