Last year or so I changed the front hub on the bike to the "normal" Profile Racing Elite hub from the Micro Mini hub I had before. The Profile "normal" Elite hub is about 1 oz heavier than the Micro Mini hub (I have a one off custom Micro Mini with 28mm outer diameter bearings vs the 26mm on the "normal" Micro Minis).
I have been looking at the Elite Cyclecross hubs for some time but never bit the bullet to buy one. On the Profile website the weight is stated at 83oz, but I also noticed no spare parts for sale or, like with most other Profile hubs "axle customization".
When I unboxed the hub, I noticed how light is is, but pulling one of the quick release cones off I see no inner threads... This was disheartening because I was hoping to easily just change the hub to bolt-on without any metal work etc.
I lace the wheel up in the video. I use one of the custom Velocity A23 rims I got months ago and use Wheelsmith DB14 184mm spoke to 2x lace. (alloy nipples)
I don't show the drillling and tapping as that took alot of time. I drilled out the axle on both ends to 5/16" (8mm) inner diameter at a depth of 1/2" or 13mm. I tapped the holes with a 3/8" x 1/16 tpi tap "set." I also drilled out the axle "cone" end caps. The bolts were also cut to about 25mm or 15/16". (titanium bolts).
The total weight of the wheel is 1 lb 2 to 3 oz with the bolts, shaving a few more ounces off the bike and still keeping the bike being mostly USA made parts, by Profile Racing. I support this grass roots BMX manufacturer as much as possible.
Anyway will the hub hold up to 1000's of miles a year?
