November 1, 1983 - Just two games into his final NBA season, Milwaukee Bucks center Bob Lanier had just about had it up to here with Bill Laimbeer. After 31 minutes of the classic Bill Laimbeer experience—grabbing, holding, rubbing, flopping, gyrating—Lanier chose to clock out early, dropping Laimbeer with a sweeping left hook (classic Lanier). Laimbeer sustained a broken nose as a result.
Lanier, who made seven all-star appearances as a member of the Pistons in the 1970's, faced jeers from the Silverdome crowd as he left the floor. The NBA's official response was swift and unforgiving: Lanier was fined a staggering $5,000 for his misdeed.
According to the New York Times, Lanier told league investigators he had had ''no reason'' to lose his temper and ''no justification for throwing the punch.''
This was not Lanier's first rodeo. During the 1976 playoffs, Lanier engaged a fan in fisticuffs after a brawl spilled over into the stands in Oakland. The fan was subsequently arrested and Lanier went on to finish with 33 points and 15 rebounds. Footage: • Bob Lanier Fights a Fan During Chaotic Pis...
The Lanier-Laimbeer punch footage comes from an episode of Fox Sports Detroit's "In Focus" hosted by Eli Zaret.
