Nigeria’s university system is under increasing strain as thousands of lecturers and non-academic staff exit public universities, raising fears about declining academic standards and weakened research capacity.
During an oversight visit to universities in the South-East, members of the House of Representatives Committee on University Education warned that inadequate replacement of retired and resigned staff since 2019 could deepen the manpower crisis across campuses nationwide. Lawmakers stressed the need for urgent recruitment, fairness in staffing, and strict adherence to the Federal Character principle to safeguard the future of higher education in Nigeria.
In this video, we examine the scale of the crisis, the lawmakers’ concerns, and what must be done to restore stability and excellence in Nigerian universities.
