Welcome back everyone! Today’s video is one I’ve wanted to make for a long time, and finally the opportunity came with the Heartland of America tour: a chance to shoot the Union Pacific 4014, the Big Boy steam engine!
This 132-foot long, 4-8-8-4 steam engine built in 1941 by the American Locomotive Company is the largest operating steam engine in the US. It produces 135,375 pound-feet of tractive effort (as many as 270 modern Ford F-150s), and has a top speed of 60 miles per hour. It's an articulated engine, meaning its front set of drivers and pilot truck (or bogie) can rotate separately from the frame to let it navigate tight corners in the track.
On the Heartland tour, the Big Boy and its train travels through ten US states, and today my friends @midnightrailfan and @jackboy317 are chasing it through Illinois. It’s a two day trip, with our first day starting in Malta (near Rochelle) and ending in Villa Grove, (near Champaign).
