Canadian negotiators are now holding intensive discussions with US officials in an effort to secure meaningful relief from existing Section 232 tariffs imposed on steel, aluminium, automobiles and lumber. In return, Ottawa could address several US concerns involving Canadian counter tariffs, dairy trade restrictions and provincial bans on the sale of American alcohol.

Prime Minister Mark Carney has warned that Canada needs a broad agreement providing relief across multiple sectors. Canadian officials have also cautioned Washington that imposing the new 50% tariffs could trigger intense domestic pressure for retaliation, potentially creating another cycle of escalating trade restrictions.

Business leaders have expressed cautious optimism after recent high-level meetings suggested a possible pathway toward an interim deal. However, uncertainty remains because any agreement ultimately requires approval from the White House.

The August 19 deadline could therefore become a crucial turning point in the future of U.S.-Canada trade relations, with billions of dollars in commerce and the stability of the broader North American trade relationship at stake.
