This is a walk on Lexington Avenue between E 121st Street and E 110th Street. It is quintessential East Harlem, which is its own neighborhood, not at all the east side of Harlem. The neighborhood used to be known as El Barrio, or Spanish Harlem, which means the neighborhood in Spanish, as it was a huge enclave for Puerto Ricans, it still is. However there are definitely more Mexicans moving in as evidenced by the increase in Mexican grocery stores.
A couple of places of note.
Sam’s Famous Pizzeria: Coming out of the subway on the south side at 116 you are met with the delicious aroma of NYC smells: freshly baked pizza. My favorite part of the pizza is the crust and Sam’s does not disappoint!
Bermudez Bakery: This is a Cuban bakery selling all the typical treats. And of course they have a great loaf of white bread for $1!
