There Is/There Are: How to Improve Your Sentences In Two Easy Steps

In this video I’ll answer your question - whether you should use “there is” and “there are” in your sentences.

First, we’ll take a look at sentence structure in the English language (and in all languages, really). Every sentence must have a Subject and a Verb (and an object - optionally).

So, if that is the case, then starting a sentence with “there are” makes “there” the subject and “are” the verb. And we’ll take a look at an example of a sentence.

And I’ll teach you an easy, two-step process of easily improving a sentence.

Step 1. Eliminate “There are” from the sentence. Just take it out. As a result, you will have something that looks like a sentence but really isn’t. So,

Step 2. Take out any extra words. Some extra words will remain in the sentence after you’ve taken out “there is” or “there are.” These are just remnants of using “there is” or “there are” in your sentence.

And the result is a clean sentence that is shorter and much more elegant!
