Hi, everybody! Kevin Weiss from bodyperformance.net. And today, I'm gonna answer another question my friends at Rip Toned Fitness that they sent along to me and the question was, "Can their wrist straps be used for exercises such as cleans and hang cleans?" And, this is actually a really good question because although it seems very straightforward, it's not just a yes or no answer. The simple answer is yes, they can be used for these exercises but with a pretty big caveat that I would not recommend using them for this exercise or these exercises unless you're a very experienced Olympic lifter, because there's a few reasons, a few things that can happen that can make it quite dangerous. You can hurt your wrist, you can get yourself caught with the weight that you're not able to handle or not able to complete a rep and then you're simply not able to get away from the weight as easily that makes it a bit dangerous so, I just gonna demonstrate real quick what I mean about how it can be dangerous for your wrist and maybe give you a couple options for exercises as far as where you could use them.
So, if you are wanting to do a clean or hang clean like an Olympic lifter does, you're gonna start yourself up the same way as if you're strapping in for an over, a double overhand deadlift. So, which is good to get a really good grip on the bar that's all great. Now, the issue that you have, I'll turn to the side here, as you can see, and I'm a good example of this is because I don't do Olympic lifts, I don't do Olympic cleans and Olympic jerks and stuff like that. They're different exercise and a very skilled exercise that is a sport all on its own. So, to explain what they're doing is when they come up, I do what's called, I call a powerlifter clean. I named that up, I don't know, I'm pretty sure I didn't invent it but when I clean up to my chest like this, I'm looking to be ready to press. So, from this position my elbows are underneath the bar and I can press overhead. This is it with their elbows much higher and the bar back into their fingers. I'm using myself as an example. I'm a good example of this. I don't have the flexibility to get my elbows up like that and into my fingers, and still be strapped in. So, if I try this with weight, I'd barely likely to put my wrist in a lot of jeopardy and possibly, and possibly hurt them. So, if you're using these for an Olympic cleans and you have the flexibility because you're an experienced lifter, can you use them? Yes. The answer is an absolute yes. If you're learning these lifts, then, I would say no. You're putting yourself in unnecessary risk and you need to work on developing that flexibility first, and then, once you have the flexibility possibly using them.
So, if you're doing the way I do it and you're doing it more for just pure strength or just to supplement
your strength training and your catch position is with the elbows directly underneath the bar, I don't see
an issue with that. If you're doing it the other way, I want you to be careful. Now, the second issue that
you can come up with is you strap yourself to the bar because you want to stay with the bar. You don't want to lose your grip on the bar. That's a very good thing. That's what straps are great for. The issue is, if you're once again not experienced at missing lifts and Olympic weightlifters are very experienced at
missing lifts because in their training they tend to learn how to miss it because they train near max a lot. So, they know how to dump a weight. Other people, not so much and I actually witnessed this with one of my friends. He was doing front squats and he had strapped himself in. I wouldn't recommend doing that but that is what he's done. So, when he got to the position where he couldn't finish his last rep, instead of being able to dump the bar forward and get away, now, he's strapped in and, he tried to get away, couldn't, lost the way down on one side, ended up badly damaging his wrist and his elbow on that side. So, that can be an issue as well, if you can't get away from the bar and get the straps to unravel for you properly, and there's a technique that an Olympic weightlifter use for wrapping up I'm sure that allows them to have a secure grip but also get away from it.
