Tom's Thumb Trail is a hike in Scottsdale, Arizona on the fringe of the Sonoran Desert Preserve.
I would classify it as on the higher end of hard, bordering on extreme due to the length and elevation gain coupled with the high amount of exposure during the middle portions of the day.
There are several viewpoints to utilize as resting points on the way up, each providing an amazing view of the McDowell Mountains, the Sonoran Desert Preserve, and Fountain Hills. On the weekend, you may even catch the Fountain Hills city fountain spraying out of the pond in the city!
This is a fairly rockly trail with firm footing. At the top you are greeted with massive boulders on the approach to the summit. At the summit, you meet Tom's Thumb - the grand daddy boulder of the McDowells.
It's hard to understand how big this freaking boulder is until you are up against it. It's a very unique landmark in the middle of my favorite mountain range of the Phoenix metro area.
This is a highly suggested hike. At the top you get an (almost) 360 degree view of Scottsdale, the Phoenix Mountain Preserves, and the aforementioned areas to the north of the McDowells.
