Notes on Neutralization Reactions
Neutralization reactions are between an acid and a base. When those two formulas react, they produce a salt and water.
We can also identify neutralization reactions between a strong or weak acid with a strong base to produce water and a salt.
Remember, an acid is any compound that can release the hydrogen ion, H+ when dissolved in water. In most common acids, hydrogen is usually listed first in the formula.
A base is any compound that produces the hydroxide ion, OH-, in solution. The common bases are identified by the presence of the hydroxide ion at the end of the chemical formula.
There are a few exceptions to this rule, where another method of writing a base is with NH3 and NH4.

When going down a row of elements on the periodic table, the atoms become larger and the strength of the bond becomes weaker, which means ACIDS become stronger.
Ex: HF, HCl, HBr, HI
As we examine the periodic table for these elements, we notice that Fluorine is at the top of the group and Iodine is located on the bottom. The strength of those elements become STRONGER as we go DOWN the row.
The strength of an acid is inversely proportional to the strength of the bond between the hydrogen and the remainder of the molecule. Strong acids have very weak bonds, and weak acids have stronger bonds.
