Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back is without doubt, one of the greatest sequels ever made. However, there are some behind-the-scenes stories that die-hard fans have never heard. Behind all the lightsabers, frozen smugglers, and daddy issues, you have stories of cast members passing out in costumes to Yoda nearly getting replaced by a monkey (yes, really). So grab your blue milk, because today we’re diving into 20 weird facts about The Empire Strikes Back that’ll make you laugh, cringe, and never look at Darth Vader the same way again.
Number 1 – The First Writer Never Got to See Her Work on the Big Screen.
George Lucas originally brought in sci-fi legend Leigh Brackett to write the first draft of Star Wars. Now, her version was… let’s say, very different. No dramatic “I am your father” reveal, and Luke’s sister wasn’t Leia—she wasn’t even on the radar yet. Basically, it was a whole other galaxy.
Sadly, Brackett passed away from cancer before Lucas could even give her notes. Imagine spending your life crafting an intergalactic epic, only to miss the premiere. Brutal. Most of her script ended up on the cutting room floor, but Lucas made sure she got co-writing credit anyway.
Number 2 – The Hoth Opener Was Basically a Blizzard From Hell.
In 1979 the Empire Strikes Back crew headed to Finse, Norway, to shoot the icy scenes on planet Hoth. You see, Finse was chosen partly because it was remote and snowy, and the plan was to Film Luke Skywalker stumbling through the snow after his run-in with the wampa.
Sounds chill, right? But instead of a scenic winter wonderland, they got slapped with one of the worst blizzards Norway had seen in a century. Like, “close-the-curtains-and-pray-to-the-Force” levels of snow.
