Cairns, Australia - The Great Barrier Reef - Dwarf Minke Whale expedition

Описание: We absolutely loved Australia and are already planning our next pass through. Our last week here we enjoyed Diver's Den Ocean Quest Liveaboard, launching out of Cairns Australia, exploring the Great Barrier Reef. This trip was a special Dwarf Minke Whale expedition, to experience amazing encounters with these inquisitive whales that happen at the peak of their migration every June and July. This is when the whales move from Antarctic waters up to the Ribbon Reefs of the Great Barrier Reef for only 2 months each year.

Amazingly, the whales come to the boats and the snorkelers, and they control the interaction and how close they get to people. The interaction is closely monitored for the protection of the whales. All snorkelers must hold onto a line that extends from the boat, and free diving is not allowed. Once the whales are comfortable with the snorkelers, they get closer and closer with each pass. There's also amazing viewing right from the liveaboard.

When the whales weren't circling the boat, it was scuba diving time. We've heard stories of the Great Barrier Reef being bleached and in not good shape. But fortunately, the reefs we dove were healthy, colorful with plentiful fish life. It also helped that we were blessed with flat seas, clear skies and good visibility most days.

Our 🧭 compass now points Northeast to the Solomon Islands for more scuba diving, then Fiji for a few months and followed by meeting Humpbacks in Tonga. Let us know if you want to come join us.
