Lockheed Martin presents a promotional film created sometime between the 1970's and 1980's in order to showcase new aircrafts and carriers. It features the activities of the AC carrier USS Enterprise, the S-3A Viking aircraft, the E-2 Hawkeye early warning aircraft and the F-14 Tomcat. The S-3 Viking is a four seated twin engine turbo fan powered jet aircraft employed by the US Navy primary for submarine warfare. In the 1990's use shifted for surface warfare and refueling. The film opens with the California Lockheed logo (:11). The USS Enterprise swings into view (1:06). The carrier is capable of launching over a half million pounds of conventional explosives in a single strike (1:17) and was capable over covering 600 miles prior to refueling (1:28). The carrier is shown in fleet exercises (1:45) US Navy submarines dive in and over the water’s surface playing hostile for the exercises (1:48). The submarine commander (2:18) hunts for surface targets and prepares for attack and escape. Grumman F14 Tomcats follow (3:50). The E-2 Hawkeye early warning (4:05) aircraft is looked to. The Grumman F14 Tomcat shoots off from the runway (4:13). The F-14’s control panel gets a close shot (4:34). A view follows from over the shoulder of the pilot in the cockpit (4:36). The craft’s weaponry is discussed; it is equipped with long range Phoenix missiles including sparrow and side winding missiles and 20 mm Gatling guns (4:51). The E-2 scans the sea and sky (5:33). The S-3A Viking (6:23) monitors the ocean depths (7:21) for submarines. The Viking crew moves ahead the carrier task force (7:59). The pilot switches to the passive flare system showing an infrared generated image (9:14). Great shots follow of radar collected images as the pilot swings in closer (9:39). High speed missile crews, frigates and destroyers comprise the carrier’s third level of defense (10:49). The ASW equipped SH-2 Seasprite prepares to land on the carrier (11:08). A buoy is cast out (11:22). These crafts are armed with acoustic homing torpedoes (11:47). Torpedoes shoot from the air craft carrier deck (12:05). The Admiral (12:33) makes decisions based upon the combat information center (12:41). The interior of the tactical support center follows (13:11). The TSC monitors aircraft carriers activities (13:18). A flight returns to the ship deck (13:29). The TSC's high speed displays (13:30) are zoomed in on. The submarine surfaces in order to show it has been hit (15:13). Another exercise shows two submarines as part of a threat (15:26). Missiles are pushed across the surface of the carrier (15:40). The Hawkeye (16:30) provides air cover at low altitudes. The A7E Corsair (16:59) appears. The S3's co-pilot detects an emission on the exam system (17:36). Line of sight transmission is used to alert the task force (18:07). The all-weather A6 intruder (18:26), the A7 Corsair (18:35) are pictured. Decommissioned ships are used for target practice (18:57). Great shots capture the ship exploding (19:30). The main strike approaches the beach (19:56). Small sorties swing in (20:12). A bird's eye view shows the attack below (21:27). The Tomcat shoots off rounds (22:11). The film concludes with the Navy’s plan for freedom of the seas (23:22). This film was produced by Lockheed California Company (23:29). A final note acknowledges participating parties (23:40). This film was presented by the Public Relations Branch (24:00).
