The uneven bars final at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games has been expected to be an epic showdown, and so far, our two favorites — Sunisa Lee of the United States and Nina Derwael of Belgium — have not disappointed. Derwael is a two-time and defending world champion on bars, while Lee has the world’s highest difficulty and is proving a strong competitor even under high pressure. Check out their background, how they’re scored, and a bit about other potential bars winners in this video!

The bars routines are a bit fast! You may want to watch them twice, sorry. The point here isn't to do a ton of score breakdown but rather to highlight routine composition + where errors are typically made. Derwael has been competing a different routine at the Olympics, so we may see slight variation, but she’s been earning 6.7s. Derwael earned a 15.000 in the routine showcased (Osijek Challenge Cup Final), and Lee earned a 15.300 in the routine showcased for her (American Olympic Trials, Day 2). Either way, both are very competitive and have been hitting above 15 consistently at these Olympic Games.
FAQ:
Does Suni really have "clean execution"?
In my opinion, yes! Her biggest issue is leg separation (Nabieva, Maloney, etc.), but that's not really visible to the judges who are watching from the side. Otherwise, she does her best to keep flexed feet, bent arms, etc. to a minimum.
Are there other scores missing in the comparison?
Nina Derwael competed at the FIT Challenge (international competition) and earned a 13.900 in quals (with a fall) and a 14.900 in the event finals. Lee earned a 13.500 at the U.S. Classic (with a fall). I didn't include these scores because they aren't representative of the gymnasts' best work and were (hopefully) fluke results.
Is Simone Biles still competing in the uneven bars final?
Simone Biles is not competing in the uneven bars final, sorry. This video was made prior to her withdrawal. Melanie de Jesus dos Santos of France will earn a shot at an Olympic medal on bars, taking Biles's place in the final.
What do you mean by Suni having a "gold to herself"?
In foolish anticipation of an American team final gold, I wrote that, meaning she'd take an individual gold medal. I also did not predict her winning an individual gold medal in the all-around! I'm super happy for her though.
Personally, I would love to see Lu Yufei and Fan Yilin of China perform at their very best in this final. Team China has struggled a lot at these games, and I want to see some success for them. Fan Yilin especially has dealt with a lot, both with missing the bars final in Rio 2016 all the way to the FIG downgrading her dismount for the 2022-24 CoP. I would love to see her grab a medal for herself in this uneven bars final. I'd also love to see Angelina Melnikova of Russia take a medal - she's grown on me a lot this quad! Of course, Elisabeth Seitz from Germany is a favorite too, and a medal after such a long career would be super awesome to see.
