Eternally grateful to Mrs Joyce Heywood and June Parkinson, who used to cook black peas and Parkin cake for us little scruffs on Bommy Night, (2 snacks that are traditionally eaten on 5th November).
Parkin is eaten on Bonfire Night because it's a traditional, long-lasting cake that was originally made from oatmeal, which was harvested at the start of November, coinciding with the seasonal festivals that predated Guy Fawkes Night. The tradition in northern England, particularly Yorkshire and Lancashire, has linked this seasonal cake to the November 5th celebration of the Gunpowder Plot due to the shared timing and the cakes' warming, spiced flavor, reminiscent of gingerbread.
Black Peas are a traditional Lancashire dish usually served with lashings of malt vinegar, and also traditionally eaten on or around Bonfire Night (5 November).
