Missoula school board sends 2 general fund levies to May ballot amid enrollment decline

Описание: Missoula County Public Schools voters will decide in May whether to approve two permanent operational levies that district leaders say are needed to keep up with rising costs and worsening teacher shortages even as student enrollment declines.

The MCPS Board of Trustees on Wednesday voted unanimously to place an elementary general fund levy of about $1.36 million and a high school general fund levy of about $1.13 million on the May 5 mail ballot. Trustees opted not to pursue a high school safety levy this year after similar measures failed in each of the last two elections.

If approved, the high school levy would increase local taxes for instruction and operations by $1,132,187, or about 3.64 mills, permanently added to the district’s voter-approved levy authority. The elementary levy would increase the general fund by $1,356,027, or about 8.17 mills, also on a permanent basis if levied at least once in the next five years.
