February 1,2026 I had the chance to revisit Angono Rizal which is a part of Laguna de Bay, the country’s largest lake, has long been vulnerable to flooding, particularly during typhoons and prolonged rainfall. Residents say, however, that conditions have worsened since construction activities intensified along the shoreline.
According to community members, earthworks, temporary embankments, and construction barriers may be affecting how water flows back into the lake during storms. While the bypass road remains incomplete, its partially built viaducts and reclaimed sections already occupy areas once open to water movement.
“The water comes faster now,” said one fisherman from Binangonan, who has lived by the lake for decades. “Before, we had time to prepare. Now it reaches our homes overnight.”
In low-lying areas of Cardona and Binangonan, families were seen reinforcing their homes with sandbags and plastic sheeting as a precaution against rising waters.
As the sun set over Laguna de Bay, the contrast the ongoing modern transport corridor standing above lakeside communities struggling to adapt to changing conditions. For many residents, the road represents progress—but one that comes with environmental and social costs that have yet to be fully addressed.
