I've been wanting to go to Iceland for a while now, I finally made the trip with a friend in October 2019. I've never seen the Aurora's. We had just 4 nights to track and photograph them. With just our luck, October marks the end of summer and the start of the winter conditions in Iceland. The average temperature in October is 35 degrees Fahrenheit, with an average precipitation of about 3 inches, thus the need for waterproof and quite warm clothes... Did I mention it's extremely windy? wind speeds are on average are 15 mph, of course we had a particularly windy week, with gusts upwards of 50 mph! Anyways every night we would get cloud cover. First at kirkjufell where we camped in a crater. Then we made it out to Vik, where we actually stayed in a cabin due to the random winter mix and high winds. The next morning we decided to drive 3.5 hours west to Stokksnes to try our luck. We arrived around 5 pm, where we saw one of the most spectacular sunsets I've ever seen. However there was enough clouds in the sky to block the Aurora's. We decided to camp the night on the beach. Little did I know I was in for a surprise. The wind that night was 50+mph and the temperatures were dipping below freezing. As we froze our asses off, we woke up around 4 a.m. to get a glimpse of the Aurora. Even though it was faint, so faint you cant see it with the naked eye, it was a sight to see and worth the miserable night. This would be our last Night before we had to drive the long 8 hours back to Reykjavik to catch our flight in the morning. As we drove back we stopped at diamond beach. As we left, we noticed in the distance a very familiar mountain that we've seen on Instagram that was dub'd "The Secret Canyon". One location my friend always wanted to find. So we decided to start the 2 hour hike up, to which led to one of the most amazing views I've ever seen. We only had about 3 hours to catch the last bus to the infamous Douglas DC-3 plane wreck. We made it just in time, otherwise we would have walked one hour in one direction. Even though there where overcast skies, we got a little sliver on the horizon of the golden sun. Made it back to Reykjavik around midnight, where we spent our last night in Iceland. It was a fun experience I would do again 100% Enjoy the byproduct of my trip to Iceland!
