(1 Jun 2018) China appealed to other governments on Friday to reject "trade and investment protectionism" after Washington raised steel tariffs and said it will impose curbs on Chinese investment.
The appeal came from Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying at a regular briefing and ahead of planned weekend talks with Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross on US pressure to narrow China's multibillion-dollar trade surplus with the United States.
The tariffs announced on Thursday on steel from Canada, Mexico and Europe have no effect on China.
However Beijing said it reserves the right to retaliate if Washington goes ahead with a threatened tariff hike on other Chinese goods.
"All countries, especially the major economies, should firmly oppose trade and investment protectionism in any form," said
Hua.
At Friday's briefing the spokeswoman was also asked to comment on remarks by the US director of the Joint Staff Lt. Gen. Kenneth McKenzie that the US has a long history of capturing small islands in the Pacific.
McKenzie's comments came as the war of words between China and the US on the South China Sea escalated.
China's construction of new islands and reefs in the sea has drawn condemnation from its neighbours and the US.
"I don't want to comment on the extreme remarks made by specific US military officials," Hua said.
"We hope the US can play a constructive role, and not be a destroyer but a contributor to the regional peace and stability," she added.
