With heavy hearts and deep gratitude, we honor the life of President Russell M. Nelson (1924-2025), the 17th President and Prophet of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, who passed away peacefully on September 27, 2025, at the age of 101. Before being called to serve full time in the Church, President Nelson was a world-renowned heart surgeon and medical pioneer. He performed Utah’s first open-heart surgery in 1955, authored influential medical research, and led in numerous surgical and cardiovascular associations.

His surgical career was an extraordinary expression of combining faith and scholarship—he once said that prayers matter, but execution must be flawless.

As prophet, he led the Church through a time of transformation and global growth. He visited more than 30 countries, announced 200 new temples, and encouraged Saints worldwide to center their lives on Jesus Christ and His saving mission.

His leadership was characterized by tenderness, humility, and relentless devotion to his calling. President Dallin H. Oaks described him as “gentlest and sweetest” among men of great accomplishment.
