In an exclusive conversation with Daily Geopolitics, Indian Army veteran Major General Dr Shashi Bhushan Asthana, a former DG Infantry and an ex-sectoral commander in the Northeast, discusses the ongoing developments in Bangladesh.
Asthana, who currently is an instructor to serving Indian Army officers and a noted geopolitical analyst, believes that the assassination of Bangladeshi politician Sharif Osman Hadi has benefited Pakistan, which has been trying to revive anti-India sentiment in its former colony.
The retired Indian General remarks that the Indian Army is much better-equipped and better-trained than it was during the 1971 Liberation War. Asthana says that it won’t be difficult for the Indian forces to do a repeat of 1971 in Bangladesh, it push comes to shove. However, he expresses hope that such a need would never arise.
Asthana also analyses the great power competition in Bangladesh, with China pitted against the US, with both the powers trying to undercut Indian interests in the Bay of Bengal and the wider Indian Ocean Region.
At the same, Asthana also expresses concern over the revival of radical Islamic terrorism in Bangladesh inimical to Indian interests.
