Pelvic Venous Disorders: Seeing the Missing Link in Chronic Pelvic Pain
Pelvic venous disorders (PVD) are often overlooked—yet they can profoundly shape a patient’s experience of pelvic pain, pressure, and dysfunction. In this conversation with Dr. Julie Baron, we explore both the clinical complexity and the deeply personal journey that led her to specialize in this area. After navigating her own postpartum challenges and struggling to find answers within the traditional medical system, Dr. Baron uncovered PVD through her own research—highlighting a gap in awareness that continues to affect many patients today. PVD represents a spectrum of symptoms related to venous obstruction or reflux, often presenting as non-cyclical pelvic pain, heaviness, urinary urgency, or postcoital discomfort—symptoms that are frequently misattributed or missed entirely in standard evaluations.
This discussion invites clinicians to expand their lens beyond regional treatment and begin to see the pelvis as part of a larger, integrated system. From breathing mechanics and postural alignment to the role of venous return and autonomic regulation, physical therapy becomes a powerful tool in both identifying and supporting these patients. We also explore the importance of proper diagnostic pathways, interdisciplinary collaboration, and thoughtful symptom management strategies such as compression and restorative positioning. At its core, this conversation is a reminder that when we listen more closely, think more broadly, and advocate more intentionally—we create space for patients to finally be seen, understood, and supported in their healing.
