STORYLINE:
Three planes filled with football fans headed for Wednesday's World Cup semi-final between Spain and Germany were forced to turn back from Durban's King Shaka airport because it was swamped by arrivals.
Airport spokesman Colin Naidoo said two planes from Johannesburg and one from Cape Town were refused permission to land because of air traffic congestion caused by the semi-final.
Naidoo said smaller aircraft were allowed to land and disembark passengers before taking off again and "parking" at the old Durban International airport.
Naidoo said planes were each allotted a landing slot but there were not enough slots for the aircraft that arrived.
Some fans were seen running from the airport to try and catch some part of the game.
"You should report this to Sepp Blatter, we sat on the airport for five hours, not moving," said one.
King Shaka airport was built to replace the old Durban International airport and cope with the influx of visitors to the World Cup. The airport opened on May 1.
Airports Company South Africa, the firm that runs the King Shaka, said in March there would "certainly be teething problems" with the move from Durban International.
