If your spinning reel feels rough, noisy, or just not as smooth as it used to, it may not be worn out — it may just need oil.
In this video I show a simple spinning reel maintenance routine that takes about five minutes and requires only a few drops of reel oil. This quick maintenance can restore smooth performance and help extend the life of your reel.
Many anglers replace reels when they start feeling stiff or noisy, but most of the time the problem is simply dry bearings or lack of lubrication.
In this tutorial I walk through the key spots on a spinning reel that should be oiled and explain the one place you should NEVER put oil.
This is basic maintenance that can be done every couple months depending on how often you fish.
About once a year, I recommend doing a full teardown, deep clean, and proper lubrication of the reel’s internal components. But for everyday use, this simple oil routine keeps most spinning reels running smoothly.
