Secretary of the Department of Home Affairs Mike Pezzullo says a plan to shut Australia's international borders was always in the “pandemic playbook” and was first discussed in late January, two months before Prime Minister Scott Morrison ordered it occur.
“The decision about the first border closure was announced on the first of February ... obviously in the lead up to that, that was late January those discussions were going on.” Mr Pezzullo told Sky News.
In an exclusive interview with Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell, the Secretary of the Department of Home Affairs said there is a chance coronavirus escaped from a laboratory in Wuhan.
“Although he describes it as 'minuscule' that the coronavirus escaped from a laboratory in Wuhan and said this is why we need an international inquiry into its origin,” Mr Clennell said.
“Our best advice to the government has been…. is that it’s most likely that this pandemic has a natural origin,” Mr Pezzullo told Sky News.
“But it’s incredibly important, even if there is a minuscule chance of there being some other cause, or indeed the nature of the natural transmission, it’s incredibly important that the international community of nations comes together to look at this question.”
