Where people go (public rockhounding zone):
The famous Black Rock / Black Spring area west of Fillmore and south of Delta has obsidian scattered on hillsides and roadbeds, including mahogany and snowflake varieties. Look around Black Spring & Coyote Spring—there’s even a community pit nearby. (Check road conditions; high-clearance helps after storms.)
Quick directions (general area):
From Deseret/Delta, many rockhounds head south on UT-257 toward Black Rock, then east on signed dirt roads toward Black Spring/Coyote Spring. Wander the surrounding hills and cuts—obsidian is widespread here. Always navigate with a current map/GPS.
What you can find:
Mostly black obsidian from pebble to fist-size, plus reddish-brown/mahogany and snowflake pieces. Sunlight makes glassy surfaces pop—scan slopes and fresh wash edges.
Land-use & ethics (important):
Much of this area is BLM public land—casual collecting for personal use is generally allowed. Respect closures and private property, pack out trash, and leave no trace.
Field checklist
Eye protection & gloves (glass is sharp)
2–3 lb rock hammer or small sledges + chisels
Buckets/bags, water, sun gear, sturdy boots & spare tire
Optional: UV light (for fun), camera, basic first aid
