The championship belt was supposed to be the one real thing in a business built on performance. What happened when it disappeared, and the promotions responsible chose to say absolutely nothing?
This is the story of seven stolen, lost, and missing professional wrestling championships across five decades. And the truth behind each one is darker than the official record will ever admit.
In this documentary, we trace the full history of professional wrestling's missing titles, from the Pacific Northwest territories of 1985 to the night someone allegedly swapped the original Big Gold Belt for a cast copy before WWE completed its purchase of WCW. We examine the WWWF Championship that Pedro Morales was defending on television while the original was already sitting in a New York pawn shop, unrecovered and unreported. We investigate the NWA World Tag Team Title that the Fabulous Freebirds carried with one belt missing, and the Jerry Lawler championship that disappeared at an autograph signing and was never found again.
We look at the night Eddie Crawford walked out of the USWA with the unified title in what the promotion called theft, and what Crawford called leverage against a company that had refused to pay his wages and deliberately stalled his career. We examine what happened when Chris Jericho's AEW World Championship, the inaugural title of the first serious WWE competitor in twenty years, was stolen from a limousine in Tallahassee, Florida just days after its creation.
And we follow the extraordinary forty-year journey of the original 1986 Big Gold Belt, commissioned by Jim Crockett Jr. and crafted by silversmith Charles Crumrine, through the Ric Flair hostage crisis of 1991, the Great Muta dent that became its permanent authenticating fingerprint, and the Scott Steiner swap of 2001 that left WWE owning the intellectual property of the championship while the actual physical belt ended up in the private collection of Conrad Thompson.
This is not the version of history that WWE puts in its documentaries. This is what actually happened to the gold.
